An Uttar Pradesh man, who lives in northern India, has been charged with killing his mother, 50, in order to collect life insurance proceeds and use them to settle debts he had accrued from his addiction to online gaming.
The suspect, according to the police, was addicted to the gaming app Zupee, where he had to borrow money in order to keep playing after experiencing recurrent losses.
Upon going through the money, Himanshu discovered he owed over Rs 4 lakh ($4,800). Under pressure from his creditors, Himanshu stole his paternal aunt’s jewelry and utilized the proceeds to purchase life insurance policies for his parents, totaling Rs 50 lakh ($60,300) each.
Police from Fatehpur stated that he waited for his father to leave the house after getting the insurance policy. Himanshu allegedly took advantage of his father Roshan Singh’s visit to the Hanuman shrine in Chitrakoot one day and strangled his mother Prabha to death.
His crime was only discovered after the father came back and began to investigate after failing to locate his son or wife.
The neighbors told Roshan that they had last seen Himanshu driving a tractor close to the riverside. After that, the police were called, and on February 21st, Prabha’s body was found. Himanshu, who had been fleeing, was soon caught.
