In November, Mitch McConnell, who has led the Senate for the longest period of time ever and survived significant upheavals within the Republican Party for nearly 20 years, will relinquish his position.
Last week, McConnell, who turned 82, made his announcement in the Senate well. This is the same chamber where, upon his arrival in 1985, he marveled at its back benches and where, as the party leaders’ front-row position became more and more comfortable, he found himself settling in.
“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said. “So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”
McConnell said he plans to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, “albeit from a different seat in the chamber.”
